[Kyoto/Ichijyoji Temple] Adult’s Holiday Tour with Photos.

Ichijoji in Sakyo-ku is located in the northeast of Kyoto City. It is a mysterious and charming area where the liveliness of a student town and the quietness of old temples and shrines coexist.

In this issue, we would like to introduce a model course, with beautiful photos, that concentrates the charms of Ichijyoji, which you can visit by riding the Eizan Train. After filling up on super-thick ramen noodles, why not spend some quiet time visiting temples with deep histories and relaxing in peace and quiet?

11:30 | First, let’s get hungry! Try the one and only ramen at “Mianya Kyokudori”!

Ichijoji is known as a battleground for ramen. Among the many ramen shops in Ichijoji, one that stands out from the crowd, with a long line of customers, is “Mianya Gokkeitoku”. The specialty here is the ultra-thick chicken ramen, which is more like a potage than a soup.

The thick, potage-like broth is entwined tightly with the noodles, and the delicious taste of chicken fills the mouth when you take a bite. The calculated taste is as unique as its visual impact. The topping of white onion adds a nice accent. Don’t forget the ajitama (seasoned egg) on the side.

The restaurant is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and there is often a line of customers waiting in line before the restaurant opens, so it is recommended to go a little early.

Once your stomach is full, take a short walk to a quieter area of temples and shrines. The first place to visit is “Enko-ji Temple.
This temple was originally a school opened by Tokugawa Ieyasu for the advancement of learning. The temple is also home to Japan’s oldest wooden typefaces (an important cultural property), and is a very important place in the history of Japanese publishing culture.

A wooden signboard reading “Enko-ji Temple Visit” invites us to enter a world of serenity. From this point onward, time passes peacefully.
The garden viewed from the porch looks like a painting. The well-kept greenery and the tiled roof, glistening in the sunlight, gently welcome visitors.
The garden is surrounded by a magnificent bamboo grove.
A magnificent folding screen painting adorns the hall. On the left are autumn leaves and bamboos, and on the right are cherry blossoms in full bloom, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the four seasons in Japan all at once. The colors are vivid against the gold background.

The entrance quietly tells that this is a special place.
Passing through a small gate with a moss-covered roof, you will find yourself in a space isolated from the mundane world. The stone steps seen beyond the bamboo fence heighten one’s anticipation of the beautiful garden that lies behind.
Inside the hall, a wooden plaque has acquired a distinctive flavor over time. Each carved character conveys the scent of the long history and culture of this place.

Raccudani Fudoin” is powerfully engraved on a moss-covered stone pillar. From the foot of the mountain, there is already a solemn and sacred atmosphere.

To get to the main hall, you have to walk a short distance up a flight of stairs.

The magnificent wooden structure supporting the main hall. The complex and powerful structure is a crystallization of the wisdom and technology of our ancestors. The broken arrows on the floor create a unique atmosphere of a place of worship.

The main hall is built in the same kakegai-zukuri (stage) style as Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The gold-colored oblong plaque and bright five-colored curtains stand out against the mountain greenery. The view of Kyoto city from here is also exceptional.
