11:30 | First, let’s get hungry! Try the one and only ramen at “Mianya Kyokudori”!
Ichijoji is known as a battleground for ramen. Among the many ramen shops in Ichijoji, one that stands out from the crowd, with a long line of customers, is “Mianya Gokkeitoku”. The specialty here is the ultra-thick chicken ramen, which is more like a potage than a soup.

The restaurant is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and there is often a line of customers waiting in line before the restaurant opens, so it is recommended to go a little early.

13:00 | Experience history and beauty at Enkouji Temple, a temple associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu
Once your stomach is full, take a short walk to a quieter area of temples and shrines. The first place to visit is “Enko-ji Temple.
This temple was originally a school opened by Tokugawa Ieyasu for the advancement of learning. The temple is also home to Japan’s oldest wooden typefaces (an important cultural property), and is a very important place in the history of Japanese publishing culture.

15:30 | Raccoon Valley Mountain Fudoin Temple, where you can feel the spirit of the mountains
To conclude your stroll in the Ichijyoji area, go a little further up the mountain to “Raccoon-dani Fudoin Temple.
Known affectionately as “Tanukidani no O-fudo-san,” this is a Shugendo (mountain asceticism) temple known for its blessings of traffic safety and protection from bad luck. Legend has it that the great swordsman Miyamoto Musashi practiced asceticism by being struck by a waterfall.

To get to the main hall, you have to walk a short distance up a flight of stairs.

The main hall is built in the same kakegai-zukuri (stage) style as Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The gold-colored oblong plaque and bright five-colored curtains stand out against the mountain greenery. The view of Kyoto city from here is also exceptional.
