History of Nogeyama Zoo
Nogeyama Zoo opened on April 1, 1951. It was established by the City of Yokohama to provide children with opportunities to interact with animals during the chaotic postwar period. The park started out with a smaller area than its current location, but with the enthusiasm and cooperation of the citizens, it was expanded and became what it is today.
So, with a history of over 70 years, the zoo has long been loved by the citizens of Yokohama. It is truly wonderful to be able to see so many animals for free!

Introduced in photos! Friends of Nogeyama Zoo
Let me introduce some of the animals you can meet at the Nogeyama Zoo, along with photos I took!
Graceful flamingos

Flamingos have beautiful bright pink feathers. They look so graceful as they stand on one leg and rest. At the Nogeyama Zoo, you can see the beniro flamingos. The pink color of the flamingos is due to the pigment in the food they eat. You can also observe them eating their food upside down, with their beaks dipped in the water.
Fluffy and cute guinea pigs

These adorable guinea pigs have dull eyes and short limbs. You can meet them at the “Nakayoshi Hiroba” (Friendship Square). Depending on the time of day, you can actually touch them! (*Please note that petting may be cancelled due to the animals’ physical condition or weather conditions.) (*The animals’ physical condition may be affected, and touch-and-feel sessions may be canceled. Watch out for the way they move around and the way they gather together to munch on grass.
They are very powerful! Ostrich

Ostriches (ostriches) are characterized by their large bodies and long necks. Even through the fence, you will be overwhelmed by their size! As you can see in the photo, the ostriches are able to stretch their necks to eat food hung high up in the air. The way they stare at you with their dull eyes is a bit humorous. The color of their feathers differs between males and females, so be sure to compare the two.
King of the sky! Condor

The giant Andean condor can reach a height of 3 meters when its wings are spread. They are truly the “kings of the sky! Up close, each feather is powerful and has an overwhelming presence. The sight of them soaring effortlessly in the wind is a magnet to all who see them. At Nogeyama Zoo, you may be able to see the moment a condor spreads its wings up close.
Fluffy! Lesser panda

The very popular red panda with its dull eyes and fluffy fur is irresistible! They look really cute curled up on a tree branch, sleeping like a stuffed animal. You can also see them eating bamboo leaves and moving around dexterously on the tree tops. I was also able to take pictures of the cute little tongues sticking out! Please try to observe the various expressions of the red panda.
Cool crocodile

Crocodiles stay still in the water. They usually do not move much, but when they catch prey, they move quickly. Their faces sticking out from the surface of the water give them a mysterious atmosphere. If you stare at them, your eyes might meet theirs…? They have a cool charm that reptile lovers will love.
Pure white beauty! White peacock

The white peacock has beautiful white feathers. Their appearance is like a wedding dress. When courting, males spread their white feathers wide to attract females. Unfortunately, we were not able to see them spreading their wings this time, but they are still beautiful enough. We hope you will try to capture their graceful appearance in your photos.
Giraffes have long necks!

A giraffe peeking over a high fence. It is eating leaves with its long neck stretched out in a delicious manner. Up close, you can see that they have long eyelashes and kind eyes. Each giraffe has a different pattern, so it is interesting to observe them closely. If you are lucky, the giraffe may come close to you as shown in the photo!
Vivid peacocks

Peacocks with bright blue-green feathers are eye-catching. This is a male Indian peafowl. It has a gorgeous beauty different from that of the white peacock. The sight of the peacock with its feathers spread out is also a sight to behold. Be sure to capture their beautiful feathers in your photos.
Fluffy! Red ruffed lemur

The red ruffed lemur is characterized by its fluffy red fur. Their dull eyes and adorable faces are very attractive. They look so cute and curious as they sit on tree branches and scurry around. You can also observe how they skillfully use their long tails to move around in the trees.
